He deleted the accounts in 2022, at roughly four hundred thousand followers, and started over with an email list of nine hundred people.
The list is now ninety thousand and, unlike the followers, it is his. Nobody can adjust its distribution, throttle its reach, or change the terms of the relationship without asking him first.
The work itself did not change much — the same essays, the same photographs, arriving weekly instead of hourly. What changed was the incentive structure. Without a feed to feed, there is no reason to make anything he does not want to make.
