A Painter’s Second Act

A Painter’s Second Act

The last major show was in 2009. What followed was not a dry spell so much as a deliberate withdrawal: teaching, a move, a long stretch of work that was made and then not shown to anyone.

The paintings that emerged from it are a third the size of the earlier ones and considerably harder to place. The color has narrowed. The gestures that made the early work legible — and saleable — are mostly gone.

Standing in front of them, the absence reads as gain. There is less to look at and much more to see, which is a trade most careers cannot afford to make.
